BMX Tech

June 24th, 2008 by Ron Callahan View Comments

I honor of BMX’s inclusion in the 2008 Olympics, I present some hot bikes and trends in the sport.

Check this out:

This is the GT Power Series Ultra Box 2. It’s a full monocoque carbon fiber race frame. Quite extreme. I don’t know if we’ll be seeing any of these in Beijing. It will be more likely to see GT’s Mike Day on something like this:

Here’s another example of carbon fiber in BMX, the Avent Morpeus:

Here’s a Free Agent similar to what Kyle Bennett will be riding:

If you are a hardcore road biker and want to turn your nose up at BMX, I would say “don’t.” BMX was my first exposure to large diameter aluminum tubes (pre Cannondale), chromoly, CNC machining (everybody), Phil Wood and American Classic.

When I was in my prime shape for racing BMX I could outsprint road riders without breaking a sweat. A BMX race is 40 very intense seconds. I’m surprised that we don’t see more BMX racers going into track and competing in match sprint events.
