Racing News – August 7, 2008

August 7th, 2008 by Ron Callahan View Comments

Here’s some of the latest and greatest news:

  • The teams for the Vuelta were announced today and the Scott-American Beef team was excluded. Race organizer Unipublic has said that the team is “not welcome.” While it’s understandable that Spaniard Moises Duenas, who was found to be doping at the Tour de France, will not be riding, it’s inexplicable why his Liquigas team received an invite. Credit Agricole will be racing as well, despite the positive test of its rider Dmitry Fofonov.
  • SRAM has sold a minority stake in its business to Lehman Brothers Merchant Banking and will be establishing a $10m (US) cycling advocacy fund.
  • Several media outlets have studied the doping controls from the Tour de France and have inferred that there may be a 5th doping positive. There is a unnamed rider who tested positive for a glucocorticosteroid that did not have a therapeutic use exemption.
  • More riders have been arriving in Beijing for Saturday’s road race and are starting to get a feel for the course. Some American riders caused a bit of tizzy when they got off of the plane wearing the pollution masks that have been provided to them. They’ve since apologized, but hey, if the air is really that bad, who cares who you are offending.
    • Thomas Rohregger of Austria has said that the air is “awful” and is plagued by burning eyes and lungs.
    • Jeannie Longo, French national champion has said she has no problem with the air.
  • Lance Armstrong does not expect to beat Dave Wiens in this weekend’s Leadville 100 off road race, but he is aiming for the Top 5 as well as stomping his longtime coach Chris Carmichael into the ground. He’ll be riding a 23 pound full suspension Trek for the race.
  • The US Road Nationals are underway in Irvine, CA, starting with the individual time trial.
