Giro del Capo 2009 – Stage 3 Results

March 6th, 2009 by Al Fresco One Comment

Day 3 of the saw Team ’s Brit, sprint over the finish line to take his third win of his professional cycling career in the blazing heat of Paarl. Second place went to Johann Rabie (Neotel), while Dennis van Niekerk of Konica-Minolta took third. After just 35km in the first climb up Franschoek Pass, David George from MTN escaped and formed the first breakaway which included John-Lee Augustyn, Robert Hunter, Chris Froome and Felix Cardenas. They were able to gain a 2 minute lead time up the climb.

Team Barloworld’s Daryl Impey remained behind in the second break which was just a few seconds in front of the third breakaway holding Stephen Cummings.

The 60km mark approached, just after Villiers, when George realized he was about to get caught – he did, when a few minutes later a bunch of 40 attacked and a new group was formed. The fragmented breakaways from Worcester took a short time to catch up and from there the peloton swelled to 100 riders. Team Barloworld’s Robert Hunter controlled the race at this stage, leading the peloton at a slow pace prior to reaching the bottom of Du Toits Kloof.

Day 2 race winner Chris Froome attacked and went over the top of the climb with David George and Kevin Evans from MTN. A group of 30 were hot on their heels. The team continued to work hard to pave a clear way for Team Barloworld’s Cummings.

Just 5kms to the finish line, the group of 30 again split into 17 of the top riders all gunning for the finish line, but it was Team Barloworld’s Cummings that managed to stay ahead of the group to claim his victory on Day 3 of the Giro del Capo and Barloworld’s third win. Felix “the mountain cat” Cardenas finished in fourth position, just a few seconds behind Cummings.

Asked what he thought of the race, Barloworld team manager Claudio Corti said: “It was very hot again today. The team took strain and worked from the start, but they gave me results. Cummings is in good shape and he deserved to win. Of course I am happy”.

Since the race has changed to a 1.2 category, there will be no race day tomorrow. Teams will recover after a 3 grueling, hot, successful race days to get ready for the big one on Sunday, The Argus.
