Electra Townie Sport 105 review
Last week, I got the chance to go for a ride on the latest bike from Electra, the Townie Sport 105.
Some of our regular readers may be shocked that we would review a cruiser. Rest assured that we love all kinds of bikes here, and that we know that a road bike is not ideal for every situation. That said, we do love speed, and a cruiser can be, well, anathema to the idea.
Not this cruiser.
While the Townie Sport still features Electra’s upright, foot forward ergonomics, it also offers a level of performance that will satisfy many. Shifting is accomplished via Shimano trigger shifters, but the rest of the drivetrain is a mix of FSA and Shimano 105 components. Gearing is a 50/34 compact crank in the front and a forgiving 12-27 10 speed in the rear. Wheels/tires are 700c with a 28mm tire that offers a nice balance of comfort and speed.
Neither acceleration or handling is as fast as a road bike, but the ride was fun, easy and comfortable. Small hills were easily attacked and the comfortable geometry soaked up bumps. The aluminum frame was sufficiently stiff, and while I noticed some bottom bracket flex, I doubt that that target rider of this bike will be doing any finish line sprints.
Any one looking for a bike to ride with the family that can still do speedy longer rides or grocery runs would find this bike well suited to their needs.
The Lowdown:
Price: $1300 (available with two other component groups for $900 and $600)
Component Details: Shimano SL-R770 flat bar road shifters, FSA Omega compact crankset, Shimano 105 f/r derailleurs, 12-27 cassette, Tektro dual pivot calipers, Selle Royal Ariel Vacuum Light saddle, 700c wheels, 28mm tires, double-sided pedals (platform/SPD).
Pros: Lightweight, speedy bike for the bike path rider who wants to go faster or the road rider who wants something with a little more comfort for rides with the family.
Cons: “One size fits most” may not fit all body types.
