Here’s the latest in cycling news for Monday, April 27, 2009:
Results:
- Andy Schleck (Saxo Bank) attacked 20 km from the finish to take a solo victory at Liege-Bastogne-Liege.
- Rahsaan Bahati (Rock Racing) and Nikki Butterfield (Webcor Builders) both powered out of their respective fields to win bunch sprints in the Dana Point criteriums on Sunday.
- Theo Bos took the win at the Tour of North Holland. He says that he will call Daryl Impey “this week” to discuss the incident at the Tour of Turkey.
Disabled List:
- Ezequiel Mosquera of the Xacobeo Galicia team fell down some stairs in his home and broke his left wrist. The team will start the Giro without their leader.
- Fabian Cancellara (Saxo Bank) comes off of the bench and will race at the Tour de Normandie.
- Garmin Slipstream’s Tyler Farrar will also return to action at Normandie. Before injuring his right clavicle at Milan-San Remo, Farrar was one of the few riders able to contest sprints with Mark Cavendish this year.
News:
- No one was happier about Andy Schleck’s victory at LBL than his big brother Frank.
- Tom Boonen is still recovering from a foot injury at the Scheldeprijs, but has made the green jersey at the Tour de France as his next major goal.
- Joaquim Rodríguez (Caisse d’Epargne) was the runner up at LBL. “For me, the second place as a victory,” said the 29-year-old Spaniard after the race. “The podium is the reward for all the work that I said in the past few years on these roads and to have the confirmation that I’m capable of, here one day to win.”
- Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d’Epargne) has decided to race in the Tour of Romandie.
- Iljo Keisse will race as an elite without a contract for the Saey-Deschacht Sports Group. He will start racing on May 10th pending any ruling between now and that time.
- Team Katusha has a group of ten riders from which they will select their seven for the Giro. They are looking for a group that can work together well for the team time trial.
- The Silence-Lotto team has dismissed talk of any discontentment between Cadel Evans and Phillipe Gilbert after Fleche Wallone. Silence team manager Marc Sergeant told AFP, “I was a little bit upset when I heard the report of that dispute because the same evening they were eating together and laughing.”
- Davide Rebellin (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocatolli) has jumped to second place in the UCI World Ranking after his victory at Fleche-Wallone. Cervelo Test Team’s Heinrich Haussler holds onto first place by a scant 3 points.
- It seems early to start talking about rosters for the Giro, but Saxo Bank has already announced their team for the race: Lars Bak (Den), Fabian Cancellara (Swi), Jurgen van Goolen (Bel), Matthew Goss (Aus), Juan José Haedo (Arg), Anders Lund (Den), Jason McCartney (US), Nicki Sørensen (Den) and Jens Voigt (Ger).
- Robert Hunter and Mauricio Soler will co-captain the Barloworld squad for the Giro. The rest of the team will be: John Lee Augustyn (RSA), Francesco Bellotti (ITA), Diego Caccia (ITA), Felix Cardenas (COL), Gianpaolo Cheul (ITA), Christopher Froome (GBR) and Paolo Longo Borghini (ITA).
