Here’s the latest cycling news from the Giro and around the world.

Giro d’Italia Day 20 News and Notes:

  • Denis Menchov increased his hold on the maglia rosa and, barring a serious incident tomorrow, will take the overall win.
  • Neither Lance Armstrong or Levi Leipheimer made quite the impact that they expected at the race, but Armstrong’s coach Chris Carmichael feels that the Giro has set him up to race a solid Tour de France.
  • Danilo Di Luca sits 20 seconds behind Denis Menchov. He would have to make up the gap over just 15 miles in tomorrow’s concluding time trial to take the overall race.

Other Results:

  • Jen McRae and Samantha Schneider of Team Type 1 finished second and third, respectively, in Friday night’s opening race of the Tulsa Tough weekend in Tulsa, Okla. The race was won by C3 Sollay’s Laura Van Gilder.
  • Bert De Waele (Landbouwkrediet) won Saturday’s fourth stage of the Tour of Belgium. Lars Boom of Rabobank has moved into the lead.
  • Jimmy Casper (Besson-Sojasun) won the second stage of the Tour de Gironde.
  • Frenchman Jérémy Galland (Besson-Sojasun) Saturday won the Grand Prix de Plumelec-Morbihan.
  • Tony Martin won Saturday’s time trial at the Tour of Bavaria. Linus Gerdemann of Milram continues to lead the race.
  • Britain’s Emma Pooley (Cervelo TestTeam) won in a solo break in Saturday’s women’s World Cup road race in Montreal, finishing 1 minute, 14 seconds ahead of the pursuers.

Other News:

  • Cyclocross Magazine released the results of a poll that shows that ‘cross brings road and mountain bike riders together and that 1 in 5 of those polled got their start in bike racing through the discipline.
  • Online registration for the 2009 USA Cycling Junior/U23/Elite Road National Championships will open at 12:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday, May 30th at SportsBaseOnline. Slated for July 28-August 2, this year’s edition is the first of two that will be held in the cycling-friendly community of Bend, Ore.
  • The riders of the Air Force – Amica Chips team have sent a letter to the UCI asking them to allow them to keep racing as team management works on the financial backing of the team.
  • Christian Vande Velde expects to return to competition at the Tour of Switzerland.
  • Alberto Contador is expected to use the Dauphine Libere (June 7th to 15th)as a tune up for the Tour de France
