2009 Tour de France – Stage 1 News and Notes

Thanks for visiting Bike World News. Here’s today’s news from the Tour de France as well as some other cycling news you shouldn’t miss:

Stage 1:

  • Fabian Cancellara (Saxo Bank) won the Stage 1 time trial with Astana’s Alberto Contador in second. Cadel Evans (Silence-Lotto) was 15 seconds back for 5th place.
  • Lance Armstrong made a respectable showing on his comeback, finishing up in 10th place. He said he was happy to be racing and added, “What a beautiful race. It was fun. I felt pretty good, overall, I feel good. I was a little bit all over the place.”
  • Cancellara says that he wants to hold onto the yellow jersey until Tuesday’s team time trial.
  • Tom Boonen had been struggling with abdominal pain and diarrhea on Friday, but woke this morning feeling better. He finished in 114th place, just under 2 minutes off of Cancellara’s time.
  • Carlos Sastre did not get to start in the yellow jersey today. Tour organizers said that that tradition had been abandoned. Sastre had a problem with his helmet that affected his position on the bike.
  • Giro d’Italia winner Denis Menchov (Rabobank) had disappointing stage, coming in 53rd, a minute and a half behind Cancellara.
  • There are 37 riders vying for the white young rider’s jersey this year. Roman Kreuziger (Liquigas) gets to wear it for now.
  • Alberto Contador gets to wear the polka dot climber’s jersey tomorrow, having set the best time at the top of the course.
  • Jan Ullrich was on the scene today and applauded Lance Armstrong’s comeback, saying it is “great and brave.”
  • Alberto Contador continues to play down conflicts in the Astana team, saying, “…the atmosphere is very good.”

Other News:

  • Barloworld team management welcomed the news of the suspension of Rabobank’s Theo Bos with relation to the crash the two had at the Tour of Turkey. saying that it denoted a willingness on the part of the UCI to punish inappropriate and dangerous behavior.

Other Results:

  • Lithuanian Edita Pucinskaite (Gauss RDZ Ormu) won Saturday’s first stage in the Giro Donne (the Tour of Italy for women). Cervelo’s Kirsten Wild won yesterday’s prologue.
  • Danilo Hondo (PSK Whirlpool) won the 5th Stage of the Polish Solidarity Tour de Course et des Champions Olympiques (Cat. 2.1), for his first win of the season.
