Americans score seven world titles on opening day of BMX Worlds
American riders dominated opening day of the 2009 UCI BMX World Championships on Thursday, taking seven of the 17 world titles up for grabs.
Over 2,000 BMX riders from 32 countries have converged on Adelaide to compete for world titles at the Adelaide Showgrounds, and the first day of competition featured Challenge class riders age 14 and younger on a 310 meter indoor track.
The strongest showing by Americans came when the 12-year-old boys took to the track. Americans swept the podium with Brock Hefron (Chandler, Ariz.) claiming the world title. Collin Hudson (Longmont, Colo.) and Damian Ontiveros (Fremont, Calif.) followed for the silver and bronze medals while fellow American Nicolas Wolthers (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) placed seventh.
In the 7-year-old boy’s contest, Americans claimed the podium’s top two spots as Julian Dittrick (Phoenix, Ariz.) rode to the world title and compatriot Wyatt Bell (Berthoud, Colo.) put forth the silver medal effort. Teammate Matthew Sterling (Saratoga, Calif.) had a strong performance, barely missing the podium with his fourth-place finish.
Maliek Byndloss (Cape Coral, Fla.) was the strongest out of the 14-year-old boys, riding to yet another world title for Team USA while fellow American Dakota Senger (Winston, Ore.) came in eighth in that group.
Cole Tesar (Huntersville, N.C.) stood atop the podium with a gold medal around his neck following his victory in the 13-year-old boys contest, and a fourth world title was claimed for the red, white, and blue when Ethan Wolthers (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) beat out the rest of the 8-year-old boys in Adelaide for the gold medal.
In the girl’s events, two Americans earned world champion status on Thursday. Kristen Long (Lakeside, Calif.) won the 13-year-old girl’s contest while Felicia Stancil (Lake Villa, Ill.) was victorious among 14-year-old girls. Shannon Glynn (Norco, Calif.) followed Stancil in eighth-place in the 14-year-old race.
Also on the podium in Adelaide on Thursday was Max Burhenn (Fortville, Ind.) who rode to a bronze medal in the 9-year-old boy’s race and Amanda Olguin (Los Lunas, NM) who also made the bronze medal effort among 11-year-old girls.
Other American finishes included Roseellen Hoke (Saint Peters, Fla.) who rode to seventh in the 9-year-old girl’s field, Cody Trippitt (Hitchcock, Texas) who was seventh among 5-6-year-old boys, and Wyatt Hubbard (Buena Park, Calif.) who made the sixth-place effort amont 10-year-old boys.
Action continues on Friday with the challenge class riders age 15 and older, and on Saturday with the elite competition.
