The Tour of Spain:
Philip Deignan’s victory today at the Vuelta is the first Grand Tour victory by an Irishman since Stephen Roche won the 16th stage of the Tour de France in 1992.
Other News:
Theo Bos will leave Rabobank at the end of the season. He has not found a new team yet, but says that he has a number of offers. Despite the crash and ensuing scandal at the Tour of Turkey, he had a fairly successful year, winning three stages in the Olympia’s Tour. He also won the Tour of North Holland and the Omloop deer Kempen.
Skil-Shimano has withdrawn its application to enter the Pro Tour and will continue to compete as a Pro Continental team and go for wildcard bids to Pro Tour events. They reserved the option to re-apply for 2011.
Shimano has issued an anti-doping statement to its sponsored teams. The basic guidelines state that they will not tolerate doping in the teams they sponsor. If team management is involved in a doping scandal, they will immediately stop sponsorship of the team. If an individual rider is involved in doping without knowledge of team management, the team will be given a chance to explain themselves, but a second violation will result in termination of the contract. Termination means that the team must return all Shimano materials provided to the team as well as any other contributions.
Team Type 1 takes aim at scoring their 100th team victory in the history of the men’s professional racing program tonight when it competes in the Second Annual TX Tough Grand Prix. The 75-minutes-plus-five-laps race around the American Airlines Center in Victory Park in Dallas is the second-to-last criterium on Team Type 1′s 2009 race calendar. It is also the penultimate event of the USA CRITS Series.
Other Results:
Nick Nuyens of Rabobank won the Grand Prix of Wallonie for the third time after a two year drought of victory. The win was a great relief for him, who said that he never stopped believing that he could win again.
