Road and Cross News and Results – October 5, 2009
Yes, the road season is definitely slowing down, but I for one (given my lack of heat tolerance) wish that there were some late season races for me. Cross you say? I don’t need to be reminded how out of shape I am.
In today’s bicycle racing news, Farrar will close his season at Paris-Tours, The Chicken wants Mexican citizenship, youth signings at Skil-Shimano and Rabobank and more…
Road News:
- After his win at the Circuit Franco-Belge, Tyler Farrar will head for Paris-Tours before closing down his season. The Garmin Slipstream rider is said to be the most-winning American man in the Pro Tour peloton.
- Doping allegations have resurfaced for Milram’s Linus Gerdemann. German television network ARD says that there are curious fluctuations in his hemoglobin from the 2006, when he was still at T-Mobile.
- The official route announcement for the Tour de France will take place on October 14th. At this point, we know that the race will have its grande departe in Rotterdam, and that the race will go around the hexagon of France in a clockwise direction. The Alps will be tackled first and it seems that the race is headed for it challenges in the Pyrenees. Ax-3 Domaines by the Black Mountain is said to be on tap, as is Portet d’Aspet, Col de Mente and the Port de Bales.
- Skil-Shimano team management has agreed a contract with major French prospect Alexandre Geniez, who was part of the successful French national squad in the U23 World Championship in Mendrisio.
- Dennis van Winden traded in the jersey of the Rabobank Continental team for the pro squad, the team reported on Monday. The 21-year-old rider signed a contract until the end of 2011.
- Michael Rasmussen, now riding for the Mexican-based Tecos Trek team, is reportedly seeking dual citzenhip in Mexico and the Netherlands [Oh give me a home, where controllers don't roam... Ed.] . He is reportedly upset over the Danish federation blocking him from the World Championships. Rasmussen is also married to a Mexican woman.
- Team Type 1 co-founder Joe Eldridge (pictured) achieved a milestone by earning Dick Lane Velodrome Rider of the Year honors and teammate Michael Creed won the silver medal in the points race Saturday at the USA Cycling Elite National Track Championships. Eldridge’s accomplishment is the 100th victory for Team Type 1 in its two seasons of competition as a men’s professional squad.
Cross News:
- Tim Johnson (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com) and Canadian Natasha Elliott (Louis Garneau) won on the second day of the Great Brewers Gloucester Grand Prix of Cyclocross.
- Niels Albert did not expect to do as well as he did in the UCI season opener at Treviso. He started the week sore and stiff, but a visit to his osteopath apparently did the trick. For his part, Sven Nys said he just did not have the strength in his legs for this go-around. He was not ready to attribute it to his busy summer on the MTB circuit, though.
Results:
- Michael Rasmussen (Tecos-Trek) won the prologue of the Vuelta a Chihuahua over Daniel Moreno (Caisse d’Epargne) and Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing).
- Tyler Farrar won the 65th edition of the Autumn Criterium in the West Flanders town of Oostrozebeke. The 25-year-old American was in a sprint with eight riders and bested Stijn Devolder and Bert De Waele at the line. Gianni Meersman was fourth and Niko Eeckhout took fifth.
