UCI Cyclo Cross World Championship

The road and BMX seasons are drawing to a close, but is heating up just in time. Your editors at Bike World News are perusing the race calendar to determine what we’ll bring you over the winter. Meanwhile, here’s all of your bicycle racing news:

Road News:

  • Lance Armstrong, Alberto Contador, Andy Schleck and Mark Cavendish are all expected to be present at Wednesday’s presentation of the course for the 2010 Tour de France.
  • With its start in Holland, followed by some dips into Belgium and Germany before reaching the Alps, the expected course looks more like a “J” than a hexagon this year
  • continues to point the finger at everyone besides himself. Now, he’s accusing former team doctor Mark Schmidt of carefully monitoring Kohl’s hematocrit to allow a blod transfusion to take place.
  • Sportweek.nl has kept their always excellent transfers list up to date.
  • Roy Sentjens of Silence-Lotto is headed to Milram for 2010.
  • Andreas Klier and Daniel Lloyd have extended with Cervelo through 2011.
  • 23 year old Belgian rider Dominique Cornu is set to join for a one year contract for 2010.
  • Astana is expected to sign a three-year sponsorship deal Monday with ’s vast state holding company. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but the contract will solve the financial difficulties that had threatened the team’s existence. Samruk-Kazyna, a state holding that encompasses some of the energy-rich country’s largest companies, including oil and gas company Kazmunaigas and national airline Air Astana, will be the team’s exclusive backer up to and including 2012. The new sponsorship deal will make it difficult for to terminate his role in Astana before his contract expires.
  • After a win at Paris-Tours, Philippe Gilbert has his sights set on next weekend’s classic Giro di Lombardia. He says that Damiano Cunego, winner of the last two editions of the race, will be his biggest competitor.

Road Results:

  • Robert Gesink (Rabobank) won the sprint over Jakob Fuglsang and Thomas Lovkvist to win Saturday’s 92nd edition of the Giro dell’Emilia. New World Champ Cadel Evans came across 4th, 25 seconds off of the lead.
  • ’s André Greipel won the 2009 edition of Paris-Bourges. The German sprinter took his 20th win of the season (the 85th for the team), in the bunch sprint over Juan José Haedo and Alexandre Usov. and Sebastien Chavanel rounded out the top five.
  • Australia’s Jonathan Cantwell edged out Garmin-Slipstream’s Chris Sutton in a bike throw to the line at the opening criterium at Sunday’s opening of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour. Jaan Kirsipuu (Estonia) won Monday’s first stage over Sutton and Cantwell, taking over the general classification in the process.
  • Francisco Ventoso won the GP Beghelli over and Enrico Rossi for his seventh professional victory.

Cyclocross News:

  • Niels Albert took the win at Saturday’s GVA Cyclocross event in Namur, France. Belgian champion Sven Nys finished second and Zdenek Štybar came in third. Albert and Nys had been the most vocal complainers about the course, which they said was “long and difficult”. On the women’s side, Daphne van den Brand won over Pavla Havlikova (Cze) and Helen Wyman (GBr).
  • Nys flipped the top two positions on Sunday, taking the win at the opening round of the Superprestige cyclocross series on Sunday in Ruddervoorde, Belgium over Albert. Stybar was once again third.
  • Katie Compton (Planet Bike-Stevens) made it three for three on Sunday in the final round of the Cincinnati UCI3 Cyclocross Festival, while Jeremy Powers (Cyclocrossworld.com-Cannondale) used a tight corner just before the finishing straight to get the better of Ryan Trebon (Kona). (VeloNews)
  • On a personal note, I got to meet on Sunday, and I have to say that she was very kind and gracious.

BMX News:

  • Americans and Arielle Martin finished third overall in the 2009 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup series following the fourth and final round in Frejus, France. In the fourth round final Robinson finished second, behind Australia’s Sam Willoughby in the main, to secure third in the overall series. Martin finished third in Saturday’s main behind series winner Latetia le Corguille (FRA) to grab third in the final standings.
