U.S Capitol Prepares For 4th Of July Celebrations

Washington, DC cycling organizers are continuing to pursue plans for two stages of the 2012 Giro d’Italia being held in the city. Plans are for a prologue and a circuit race to be held in the capital region and to pass many of our national monuments.

Giro director Angelo Zomegnan and other race officials visited the city a couple of weeks ago. They visited New York City as well, raising speculation that its’  Little Italy neighborhood may see a stage of the race.

Both Washington’s Convention and Sports Bureau and the city’s mayor strongly support the bid.

The Giro will have three stages in the Netherlands in 2010, but none of the Grand Tours has ever had a start outside of Europe.

The Tour de France was reportedly looking at a start in Qatar sometime in the future.
