In today’s bicycle racing news, Lance Armstrong doing Amstel Gold Race, Wiggins says Alberto is the man to beat. Ricco hopes to line up at Milan-San Remo and more…

  • In an interview with NOS Studio Sport, Lance Armstrong confirmed that he would be riding April’s Amstel Gold Race.
  • Hayden Roulston notched the first pro stage race win of 2010, taking the overall at the Tour of the Vineyards, New Zealand’s national race which took place from January 1st to 4th.
  • Bradley Wiggins insists Alberto Contador is the man to beat if he is to realise Team Sky’s ambition of winning the Tour de France in the next few years. Much like Britain’s thrust for Gold during the Beijing Olympics, Wiggins says that second place is not good enough.
  • As we noted and suspected this morning, sprinter Ben Swift was on stage for today’s official Team Sky launch. He feels that Sky will be a “perfect environment to grow as a rider” and already feels comfortable with the team as he knows many of the support staff and riders. Swift won a stage in last year’s Tour of Britain, but says that his short term goal is March’s Track World Championships in Copenhagen.
  • Ricardo Ricco’s doping ban expires on March 18th, and he hopes to be on the start line for March 20th’s Milan-San Remo race. Ricco has already committed to the Ceramica Flaminia team for the next two years.
  • 18 year old Italian rider Eugenio Bani signed a contract with the Amore & Vita team, making him the pro peloton’s youngest rider in 2010. He is currently subject to a 21 month ban in Italy (HCG was found in his bloodstream in a test), so he will only participate in races outside of the country.
  • After Alberto Contador signed a personal contract with Specialized late last year, it should come as no surprise that Astana will be riding Spesh bikes in 2010.
