Team Saxo Bank’s Michael Morkov and Alex Rasmussen were off to a flying start on the first day of the six-day race in Rotterdam, Holland. They are now in the lead after taking a round on their opponents late Thursday night.

Morkov and Rasmussen had a promising start on the first day of six-day race in Rotterdam, Holland. They are now in the lead after taking a lap on their opponents in tonight’s last hunt with just fifteen laps to go. This came after an opening hunt where no one was allowed to escape from the field.

And although the couple is aware of the lack of speed, they are totally satisfied with tonight’s result:

“It’s nice to be able to start the year this way. We were a bit nervous before the race, since December we have been doing many kilometres on the road and almost no competition, which means that we lack pace and speed but we have the endurance and that is what we need to win over here. We have no intentions to defend our lead but we see the lead as an investment for the coming days,” said Morkov after the first night in Rotterdam.

The race ends Tuesday night.

Overall Ranking:

  1. Morkov – Rasmussen, 55 points
  2. Risi – Marvulli, 49 points, 1 lap behind
  3. Stam  – Keisse, 48 points, 1 lap behind
  4. Schep – Bos, 47 points, 1 lap behind
  5. Lampater – Bon, 39 points, 1 lap behind
  6. De Ketele – Ligthart Pim, 30 points, 1 lap behind
