In today’s cycling news, Meyer=Schleck?, broken rib for Niels Albert and a day in court for Valverde:
- The Garmin-Transitions team is shaping up to have its own version of the Schleck Brothers. Australians Travis Meyer and Cameron Meyer had a very good weekend, with Travis taking the Aussie Road Champs and Cameron winning the time trial comp.
- Fumiyuku Beppu may have to pay his way out of Skil-Shimano if he wants to ride with Lance Armstrong this year.
- The 2009 Tour de France will see a stage complete at the King Baudouin in Brussels as a tribute to five time winner Eddy Merckx.
- The Court of Arbitration for Sport will meet tomorrow in Laussanne to consider the case of Alejandro Valverde. The hearing is expected to last three days. Testimony will be heard from 19 people including officials of the Italian Police and the Guardia Civil Spanish. If Valverde’s appeal is rejected, its fully expected that he’ll see his Italian ban taken worldwide.
Cyclocross News:
- World Cyclocross Champion Niels Albert suffered a broken rib after being knocked to the ground by one of his fans during the Belgian National Championships in Oostmalle. Sven Nys went on to win the national title, while Albert ended up in ninth. Albert’s appearance in Sunday’s World Cup race in Roubaix is in question.
Six Days of Rotterdam:
- Bruno Risi and Franco Marvulli succeeded in exploiting the absence of Team Saxo Bank’s Michael Morkov by taking the lead of the six-day race in Rotterdam. The Swiss took a lap on Alex Rasmussen and his temporary partner, Peter Schep while the Danes still lead on points. Morkov is expected to return to race tonight with the goal of retrieving the lost lap before the big final on Tuesday night.
