Ride cycling’s winter mecca with Epic Planet Tucson

January 11th, 2010 by Ron Callahan View Comments

We’ve had a chance to review some of Epic Planet’s DVDs before. Epic Tucson is the latest edition and it gives us basement-bound cyclists a chance to virtually experience the winter cycling mecca of Tuscon, AZ.

Epic Tucson includes virtual bicycle rides of two of Tucson, Arizona s most scenic and challenging cycling routes: the climb of Mt. Lemmon and the loop road in Saguaro National Park  East.

The climb of Mt. Lemmon virtual ride follows three female competitive riders from the Summit Velo Racing Team based in Tucson, Az. on an almost 4,000 foot climb up the Mt. Lemmon Highway approach to Mt. Lemmon and gives virtual riders 70 total training hard climbing minutes.

You may think that a 70 minute climb workout on the trainer would get boring, but Epic Planet’s fantastic imagery and music keep you on the bike and moving your legs for the whole time. Much like a real ride, you get a view of the sites and scenes around you and the desert landscape of the Mt. Lemmon climb offers plenty of stunning visuals.

If you need to know more about the attractiveness of this area to pros, Lance Armstrong and the Radio Shack team just finished up a training camp in the Tucson region.

For a more diversified workout, Epic Tucson includes a video of a loop through Saguaro National Park East. This exhilarating, 45 minute roller coaster bicycle ride with members of the Cactus Cycling Club takes in the gorgeous Sonoran desert east of the city.

As with all Epic Planet DVDs, Epic Tucson is filmed in beautiful hi-def video and each DVD utilizes epicRIDES on-screen digital dashboard showing terrain profile, ride time, average grade, and suggested training zone. The video interface is clean, simple and elegant, so as to not detract from the beautiful scenery in the rides.

Epic Planet is now offering power profiles for those riders with programmable indoor trainers. PowerProfiles are downloadable time-based workout files that are compatible with the CycleOps PowerBeam Pro and 400 Pro Indoor Trainer, with more trainers to come. PowerProfiles will sell for $4.95 each with 50% of sales going to cycle related charities but are offering them for free with an introductory offer.
