In today’s cycling news, lack of radios jeopardize ’s TdU defense, Matthias Russ wants another crack at the Giro, brief results from de San Luis and more…

  • Stage 1 of the Tour Down Under opened with a crash. 200m from the start, Spaniard Gorka Izaguirre took down two of his teammates, resulting in a mass crash. Lance Armstrong, and nearly half of the field went down, but there was no material damage.
  • Lance Armstrong likes his season start so far. He says that the first stage “was not easy” but he was happy with stage.
  • In an interview with Bike Radar, says that he has put his dreams of winning the Tour de France aside, but says that he can still be a factor in helping new leader Alberto Contador take another win.
  • Defending Tour Down Under champion Allan Davis found himself 8 minutes off of the lead after “miscommunication” (or complete lack of communication) with . He was on the back of the field when a large group went off the front on the last climb of the day and missed the jump to the attackers. His new team was riding without radios. He still hopes for a stage victory.
  • () posted on his blog that this was the “best winter in years” and that the weather has been ideal for training.
  • ’s Matthias Russ wants another crack at the Giro d’Italia this year after breaking his in a fall during last year’s race.

Six Days of Bremen:

Tour de San Luis:

  • Italians dominated in the first stage of the Tour de San Luis. () won the bunch sprint in front of the Argentine Edgardo Simon (Funvic) and his two compatriots (Katyusha) and (Androni).
  • For the second stage of the Tour de San Luis, the Footon team captured their first podium, with Spaniard Rafael Valls taking the win. Arnold Alcolea took second and Jackson Rodriguez was third. Valls took over the race lead from Francesco Chicchi.
  • Samuel Dumoulin () won the 1st stage of Tropical Amissa Bongo 2010, ahead of sprinter Giovanni Bernaudeau (Bbox ).
