Team Sky rolled to a win in Sunday’s opening team time trial at the Tour of Qatar. Edvald Boasson-Hagen gets to don the gold leader’s jersey in tomorrow’s stage as he crossed the line first. Team Sky recorded a time of nine minutes and 41 seconds on the 8.2km circuit around West Bay Lagoon to finish well ahead of their rivals.  They handled changing wind conditions superbly to clock up an average speed of over 50km/h.

The stage was the scene of a little controversy as the Cervelo Test Team ended up being penalized 1 minute. Race commissioners observed Heinrich Haussler pushing his Norwegian team-mate Gabriel Rasch for about half of the 8.2 km course. Cervelo was originally tied for second place with the Garmin Transitions team, just 8 seconds behind, but ended up receiving a one minute penalty from race officials. The penalty dropped the team to last place. Cervélo sports director Jens Zemke says that the push was intended to help avoid a crash in the strong side winds
