The 27-year-old rider outsprinted Jurgen Roelandts (Omega Pharma Lotto) and Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel) for the win.

“It was a long day. I am very tired but happy,” said Greipel on his sixth season victory.

The HTC-Columbia sprinter knocked the  first stage winner Benoît Vaugrenard (Française Des Jeux) from the top of the standings. Vaugrenard finished 8th for the day and slipped into second place, five seconds back. Roelandts is third, 8 seconds off.

Until a few meters from the finish, it had looked as if David Vittoria (Fotton Servetto), the last remnant of a long breakaway, would take the race. He was caught just 200m from the finish. He, along with Jeremy Hunt (Cervélo Test Team), Jerome Baugnies (Topsport Vlaanderen), Michal Golas (Vacansoleil) and Julien Fouchard (Cofidis) led much of the race. Vittoria was in no man’s land with 17 kilometers to go.

Defending champion Alberto Contador finished with the peloton.
