In today’s cycling news: new test will detect HGH, Gert Steegmans still feeling effects of Algarve crash, Rudy Pevenage breaks from Rock Racing and more…
- The anti-doping fight moved forward a step this week with a new test to detect human growth hormone. The blood test was developed by a group of scientists of the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich, at Bidlingsmaier Martin and Christian Strasburger. WADA officials hinted that some blood samples already taken may be analyzed for presence of HGH. [Quite happily for cycling, the first athlete nabbed by the new test was a British rugby player. - Ed.]
- Ivan Basso will start his 2010 season at the GP Insubria. While he is not yet in peak condition, he says that he will be a top form for the Giro and the Tour de France.
- Gert Steegmans still has a headache after Friday’s fall in the Tour of the Algarve, but was back on the bike training yesterday. He’ll take a long ride today before deciding whether to ride Het Nieuwsblad. [We think that Steegmans needs to google "concussion warning signs" - Ed.]
- Nicolas Vogodny (BBox Bouyges Telecom) has received the all clear for his heart issues and is able to resume training. The two-time French champion has to start training from scratch and will not likely race until the end of April.
- Rudy Pevenage told the media that he has not worked for Rock Racing since late 2010 and is still waiting for several months of back salary.
- Eurosport will deliver more than 250 hours of cycling programming in 2010. The network will broadcast all of the Grand Tours as well as the World Championships, and a number of other classics and stage races including: Paris-Nice (7-14 March), Tirreno-Adriatico (10-16 March), Milan-Sanremo (20 March), Tour of Flanders (April 4), Paris-Roubaix (11 April), Amstel Gold Race (April 18), Flèche Wallonne (April 21), Liege-Bastogne-Liege (April 25), Tour of California (16-25 May), Tour du DauphinĂ© (6-13 June), Paris – Tours (10 October) and Giro di Lombardia (October 16).
- Vania Rossi, former partner of Ricardo Ricco, says that he destroyed their relationship with a press release and a text message and that he has never spoken to her personally since her doping positive came to light. He has not made efforts to see his infant son since the incident either.
- Organizers announced today that they are postponing the Richmond Twilight Grand Prix until 2011. The event, formerly known as the CapTech Classic, had been scheduled to make its return to downtown Richmond, Virginia and the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar this year on June 10 after a four year hiatus.
- Navigation errors and misfortune thrived during the first day of the 2010 Alpine Epic Mountain Bike Stage Race yesterday with Tony Hogg and Mark Williams taking two stage wins from defending champions Kashi Leuchs and Marcus Roy.
- Gaerne is the new shoe supplier to the Lampre-Farnese Vini team and has introduced a Carbon G.Myst Plus Lampre-Farnese Vini special edition shoe in honor of the partnership.
