Thursday’s stage covered 165 km around the town of Montecatini Terme. The mostly flat start gave way to a climb near the halfway point at Goraiolo, complete with twisty, technical roads. Upon returning to Montecatini Terme, the riders completed 4 traversals of a 14 km loop that includes a modest climb on each pass. From there, a gradual downhill run of 12 km led to a slightly uphill finish.

With the long flat run to the finish, it was a day for sprinters, and Tom Boonen (Quick Step) bested Paul Martens (Rabobank) and Daniele Bennati (Liquigas-Doimo) in the group gallop to the line.

The break of the day lasted until only 3.5 km were left in the stage. The group of four consisted of Alan Marangoni (Colnago-CSF Inox), Alan Perez Lezaun (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Diego Caccia (ISD-Neri) and Mikhail Ignatiev (Katusha) and build the lead up to four minutes before a Liquigas-Doimo, Sky and Garmin-Transitions coalition brought them back in.
