2010 Tirreno – Adriatico Stage 5 Results
Sunday’s route from Chieti to Colmurano was shortened from 234 km to 216 km due to snow on some of the roads in the Monte Sibillini mountains. Three moderate climbs were replaced by one tough climb as a result of the change. The finish, with the 750m 15% wall (max 20%) just 1 km from the line, remained intact.
Enrico Gasparotto (Astana) claimed the stage 5 victory, winning the sprint from a four-man split in Colmurano. The Italian is more of a sprinter than a climber, but made sure he had a chance at victory by going across to a late attack before the final steep climb to the finish in Colmurano.
Gasparotto was caught by Stefano Garzelli (Acqua & Sapone), teammate Maxim Iglinsky and world champion Cadel Evans (BMC) in the final kilometer but then used his faster finish to win the sprint.
Garzelli was second, with Iglinsky third and Evans fourth following his unsuccessful late attack.
Overall leader Michele Scarponi (Androni Giocattoli) lost a few seconds but kept his overall lead. Garzelli is now second at 10 seconds, Iglinskiy is third at 15 seconds, with Evans fourth at 18 seconds.
