Another clueless, irresponsible radio jock

March 18th, 2010 by Ron Callahan One Comment

Update: ESPN 980 management pulled the original recording of the broadcast off of the air, but several people captured it and transcribed it before that happened.  BWN reader J. Alain Ferry sent me this messeage:

Hi Ron.  FYI, ESPN removed the podcast of Kornheiser’s March 11th show. I posted the audio (mp3) and transcripts here: bit.ly/tonyk

Tony Kornheiser, an on-air personality for ESPN 980 Sports Radio, recently advised motorists to run down cyclists in the D.C. area.

His comments came upon the news that additional bike lanes were being added to the district. He belittled cyclists with their “shiny shorts and silly hats” and claims that their actions “dare us to run ‘em down.” Click here to listen to his rant. The part about cyclists starts a little after 30 minutes in.

Kornheiser’s show is broadcasted along the whole mid-Atlantic seaboard, reaching a large segment of the American population. We are asking all of our readers to contact ESPN 980 management and ask that action be taken for these irresponsible and inflammatory comments.

Yet another update: I received an e-mail from someone that didn’t have the balls to use his real e-mail address:

Tony Kornheiser is right about many bikers including I suspect, you. They are arrogant jerks who think they own the road and behave accordingly instead of obeying traffic laws like they expect everyone else to.

My response, which bounced back:

Seeing as how you don’t know me, I don’t see how you can make that comment. I could be a paraplegic for all you know.

That said, yes, there are bad bikers, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to call for their death. Bad drivers kill plenty of people on their own every day.
