More new bikes for Paris – Roubaix

Winners celebrate on the podium

Just a day after Skil-Shimano’s announcement of a new bike from Koga for the Hell of the North, Quick Step, Saxo Bank and Omega Pharma-Lotto all are hinting at new equipment for the race.

Quick Step:

Tom Boonen and Stijn Devolder will receive new bikes from Eddy Merckx and other members of the team will receive special equipment for the day.

Boonen and Devolder’s bikes are said to have a longer wheelbase and will likely feature wider stays to allow bigger tires to be fitted. Not only will the team’s follow car be stocked with extra wheels, but VIP cars will be fitted out as well.

There were allusions to the bikes on the Eddy Merckx website, but the site is currently down.

Saxo Bank:

Saxo Bank team sponsors Specialized have provided a few of their riders with their latest ‘Project Black’ road bike for this Sunday’s Paris-Roubaix. It’s expected that the new bikes are almost certainly a thinly veiled preview of an upcoming S-Works Roubaix SL3.

Compared to the Roubaix SL2, the new bike takes the design concepts further. The Zertz inserts are larger at both ends. The ‘Project Black’ seatstays are even skinnier and follow a straighter path from the seat cluster to the dropouts than those on the SL2.

Omega Pharma-Lotto:

Most of the riders of Omega Pharma-Lotto will ride aluminum framed bikes on Sunday. Only Greg Van Avermaet swears by his carbon fiber bike for the race.

Like the bikes of Quick Step, Omega Pharma’s bikes will have an extended wheelbase and riders will be able to choose from 25 or 28mm tires.

Not only bikes:

The bikes are not the only things receiving reinforcements. Some teams are planning to add skid plates to the undercarriage of their follow cars to ensure that they will be able to avoid mechanical difficulties and stay close to their riders and provide support.
