In today’s bicycle racing news, more from the Giro, fifth child for Lance Armstrong, Samuel Sanchez focused on the Tour de France and more.
More Giro News:
- Climber Domenico Pozzovivo and sprinter Sacha Modolo will lead the Colnago-CSF Inox team in the 93rd Tour of Italy. Manuel Belletti, Alessandro Bisolti, Frederick Canuti Frapporti Marco Stefano Pirazzi, Alan Marangoni and Simone Stortoni will round out the roster.
- AG2R for the Giro: Bonnafond Guillaume (FRA), Alexander Efimkin (RUS), John Gadret (FRA), Sebastien Hinault (FRA), Yuriy Krivtsov (UKR), Rene Mandri (EST), Anthony Ravard (FRA), Ludovic Turpin (FRA) and Tadej Valjavec (SLO).
- Team Type 1 founder Phil Southerland says that he has his eye on the 2011 Giro and is working to increase the team’s budget in order to make a go at the race. Southerland and team DS Vasily Davydenko met with Giro director Angelo Zomegnan in Italy yesterday.
Other News:
- Lance Armstrong has announced that he and his girlfriend Anna Hansen are expecting their second child in a year. Armstrong Twittered the announcement indicating that the new born could arrive in October. It would be the fifth child for Armstrong who also has three children with former wife Kristin.
- Mark Cavendish has publicly apologized for the gesture that he made on the finish line at the Tour of Romandie on Thursday. Cavendish says that he wanted to “make a statement” to his critics, but added that “a rude gesture on the finish line is not the best way to do that”. “I hope I can redeem myself and show my feelings and passion for cycling with some exciting results in the next couple of months rather than with gestures such as the one yesterday,” he added.
- Tomorrow, after the arrival of Tour de Romandie at Châtel, France, Omega Pharma-Lotto will present Philippe Gilbert with a special jersey made by Vermarc Sport commemorating his leadership of the 2010 UCI World Ranking, rewarding the most regular rider to this day. The team, along with several other Pro Tour squads have urged the UCI to allow a similar jersey in competition, but the UCI has refused so far.
- Olympic Champion Samuel Sanchez says that he is “completely focused on the Tour de France” after skipping the event in 2009 in favor of the Vuelta and the World Championships. He is planning to race in June’s Dauphiné Libéré and may take on the Spanish National Championships as well.
- Italy’s Giovanni Visconti is the new leader of the Europe Tour ranking after dominating the Presidential Tour of Turkey.
