In today’s bicycle racing news, Bahati team will continue, Sinkewitz finds a ride with ISD-Neri, QS manager dreams of Belgian superteam and more…
- Rumors have been swirling about the Bahati Foundation team folding following the Floyd Landis doping allegations and statements, but the team is continuing on without its co-sponsor. “The Bahati Foundation Pro Cycling Team will be moving forward without the continued support of OUCH Medical Center due to the recent turbulent media environment. We are extremely thankful to Dr. Brent Kay for his generous support and respect his decision to minimize involvement in the cycling world at this time.” read the team statement. It continued: “.. due to the media intensive environment, the team and Floyd Landis have decided to amicably part ways. We support his courage to come forward in an effort to facilitate a drug free and fair sport.”
- BMC’s Mathias Frank’s traveled nearly halfway around the globe to Park City, Utah to receive therapy for his achilles tendon injury while mixing in a healthy dose of training at altitude. “I want to say thank you to Dr. Max Testa and his wife, Julie, for everything they did for me while I was here, and also to the team,” Frank said.
- Mercator Insurance has extended its contract with Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator for two additional seasons and will be with the team through the end of 2012.
- Patrik Sinkewitz has found a new employer. The 29-year-old Hessian will ride for the Italian team ISD-Neri and will make next week’s Tour de Luxembourg his first race. His contract will run through the end of the year, with options to extend beyond that.
- Tom Boonen has just 10 days left to wear the Belgian national jersey in competition. Nine of them will be in the Tour of Switzerland, starting June 12th. The last will be at the next running of the national champs. He says that he would like to have the jersey for another year and that the course suits him.
- Quick Step manager Patrick Lefevre dreams of a Belgian super team, combining the best riders from Quick Step and Omega Pharma-Lotto will equipment backing from Eddy Merckx. “He is the key to our sport,” Lefevere said of Merckx. “With his help, a team with a budget of 15 million euros is possible.” This is what you need today to compete with foreign teams. Could something be in the works?
- The Tour of Missouri is officially dead for 2010.
- After eight days of racing on more than 800 miles of California roads, Australian Michael Rogers grabbed the overall win ahead of Dave Zabriskie and Levi Leipheimer. With 192 points, Rogers also now leads the Pro Tour standings.
