Thule recalls Domestique Bike Carriers
In cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Thule, Inc. of Seymour, Connecticut is voluntarily recalling its Domestique Bicycle Carriers, Model 513.
They were sold between April and May 2010.
Thule has determined that a defect exists which may impact motor vehicle safety. Thule requests that consumers stop using this rack immediately.
During installation or use of the Domestique bicycle carrier, the rear fork head boss (area inside hole where bolt is placed) may fail. If the rear fork head boss fails, the fork head may become loose resulting in the instability of the front end of the Domestique bicycle carrier and any attached bicycle. This instability may cause both the Domestique bicycle carrier and attached bicycle to break free and/or separate from the vehicle.
In order to remedy this situation consumers are asked to call the Thule consumer service toll-free at 1-800-238-2388. Thule will provide consumers, at no charge, either a Domestique Recall Kit (#7521157001) which includes replacement fork head, tool and instructions to replace the head or a new Domestique bicycle carrier with fixed fork head.
There have been no reported injuries. The bicycle carriers involved were sold at bicycle, sporting goods, and automobile supply stores between April and May 2010. The suggested retail price was $139.95. The recall is the result of an investigation conducted by Thule that revealed the design flaws that will now be remedied.
Consumers should stop using these bicycle carriers immediately and contact Thule at (800) 238-2388 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. (EST) for information on how to obtain free Recall Kits. Consumers can also obtain information on this recall online at www.thule.com.
