Berden is new men’s standings leader in USICX series

Four races on two coasts on the United States International Cyclo-cross Calendar (USICX), gave riders ample opportunity to make a move in the standings, last weekend. On Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 3-4, riders contested the NBX GP in Warwick, R.I., as well as Cyclocross LA in Los Angeles, Calif.

MEN

Ben Berden (BEL/Ops Ale-Clement) totaled 100 points over the weekend, to jump into the lead of the USICX men’s standings from third place. Berden, who won Sunday’s Cyclocross LA after placing second to Tim Johnson (Beverly, Mass./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld) on Saturday, now leads Jeremy Powers(Easthampton, Mass./Team Rapha-Focus) by 22 points and Ryan Trebon (Bend, Ore./LTS-Felt), who sit in second and third, respectively. Justin Lindine (New Salem, Mass./BikeReg.com-Joe’s Garage) finished sixth in both races in Rhode Island to hold on to fourth place. Lindine has a narrow, 11-point edge over Jamey Driscoll(Winooski, Vt./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld). Driscoll was second in Sunday’s NBX GP after finishing third on Saturday.

WOMEN

Meredith Miller (Fort Collins, Colo./California Giant-Specialized) and Andrea Smith (Somerville, Mass./LadiesFirst Racing) swept both days of the races they contested to make big jumps in the USICX women’s standings. Miller won both days of the Cyclocross LA to move from fifth place in last week’s standings to second place this week. On the east coast, Smith won both days of the NBX GP to add 120 points to her total and climb from seventh to fourth in one week. Laura van Gilder (Cresco, Pa./C3 p/b Mellow Mushroom), who finished second and third to Smith, holds a 115-point cushion on Miller atop the standings. Katerina Nash (CZE/Luna Pro Team) slipped to third place, seven points behind Miller and 65 points ahead of Smith. Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rabobank) dropped from third to fifth, five points behind Smith.

COMING UP

There are only five races remaining on USICX and three of them are slated for this weekend. TheUSGP of Cyclocross Deschutes Brewery Cup in Bend, Ore., will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 10-11. Also on Sunday, the Kingsport Cyclo-cross Cup is slated in Kingsport, Tenn.
