Amber Neben Rides to Fourth in Road Race at 2012 Road Worlds

2012 Olympian Amber Neben (Lake Forest, Calif./Specialized-lululemon) capitalized on her presence in the lead breakaway to ride to a fourth-place finish in the elite women’s road race at the 2012 UCI Road World Championships.

Neben was part of a five-woman breakaway that was eventually joined by Marianne Vos of the host country the Netherlands. Vos, the 2012 Olympic women’s road race champion, surged ahead on the final climb of the day and rode alone to the finish to earn the rainbow jersey. Neben followed 33 seconds behind her, and just 15 seconds off the medal stand behind third-place Elisa Longo Borghini of Italy.

Evelyn Stevens (Dennis, Mass./Specialized-lululemon), who earned a silver medal in the elite women’s time trial on Tuesday, was the next highest-placed American after finishing 16th.

Teammates Nathan Brown (Covington, Tenn./Bontrager Livestrong Team) and Gavin Mannion (Dedham, Mass./Bontrager Livestrong Team), who suffered a mechanical in final few hundred meters, both finished, along with Warbasse, with the same time as the winner, Alexey Lutsenko of Kazakhstan.
