Team Type 1-Sanofi rider Aleksandr Serebryakov won stage four at the Tour of Hainan on Tuesday, coming first to the finish line in the capital of China’s tropical coffee growing region for his second consecutive victory in the nine-stage race.
Serebryakov, from Moscow, defended his leader’s jersey for the third day, and will once again don yellow on Wednesday for stage five. Teammate Rubens Bertogliati, who is finishing his professional cycling career here at the Tour of Hainan, jumped into the day’s breakaway to police the escapees and prevent any late stage surprises.
“The race is already four days old, and the fatigue in the riders’ legs is evident in the speed and tactics. With Rubens in the break we had teammates at the front of the chase controlling the gap with relative ease today, much less difficult than on Monday. Unfortunately we lost one rider to a crash, and that meant the workload was spread a little more heavily among Team Type 1-Sanofi,” Serebryakov said.
