After sweeping both the men’s team and individual titles on USA Cycling’s National Racing Calendar (NRC) this past season, Georgia-based On The Rivet Management announced it will restructure its professional team and lineup of sponsors to race in North America in 2013 as the 5-hour ENERGY presented by Kenda Racing Team. On The Rivet Management will combine athletes and staff operations from two of last season’s top men’s UCI Continental professional cycling teams. The 5-hour ENERGY presented by Kenda Racing Team will launch on January 1. The team roster and team kit were revealed today.
“The staff and roster will be a combination from the current Competitive Cyclist Racing Team and the Kenda / 5-hour ENERGY programs. We are very excited to have a great foundation for 2013 and beyond with so many dedicated partners, from 5-hour ENERGY and Kenda as leading sponsors to new support from Devinci for LEO SL and LEO T2 bicycles,” said managing partner Jason Kriel, who started On The Rivet Management with Josh Saint in 2010.
Hincapie Sportswear, which has supported the Kenda program for four years, will be the official clothing supplier for the 5-hour ENERGY presented by Kenda Racing Team. The prominent red, black and yellow team colors will be incorporated with the Velocity collection of race gear, which features aerodynamic panels, minimized seams, and a tight anatomic Pro fit.
Competing in 2012 as the Competitive Cyclist Racing Team, the On The Rivet team won the NRC team championship with 17 overall wins and 46 podium finishes, as well as a strong showing at the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah. The team featured Spanish strongman Francisco “Paco” Mancebo, who also captured the NRC Individual title for a second consecutive season. The Kenda/5-hour ENERGY presented by Geargrinder team finished 2012 with 47 victories, the most total wins for any men’s team on the NRC last year.
The new 5-hour ENERGY presented by Kenda Racing Team will be led by cycling commentator and former 12-year pro cyclist Frankie Andreu. He directed the Kenda squad for the past three seasons, will serve as the directeur sportif for the new 10-rider UCI Continental team.
“For 2013 I’m very happy with the makeup of the team. We have brought together a great squad for the mountains and many of our riders are equally accomplished in the time trials. Our young riders have already proven themselves on the circuit, and combined with the power and speed from some of our veterans, we do not have to just focus on the general classification,” said Andreu. All riders will take part in a team camp in mid February, to be held in Dahlonega, Georgia. “The roster was reduced to a more manageable group of strong riders, and this will allow everyone to have a chance to meet their goals at key races during the season.”
Mancebo will return as the team captain of the 5-hour ENERGY presented by Kenda Racing Team. He captured GC wins at the Cascade Cycling Classic and the Joe Martin Stage Race, plus scored a victory at the one-day Tour of the Battenkill. Mancebo will return for a third year with an On The Rivet-owned team. In his European racing career, he finished third overall in the Vuelta a España two times (2004, 2005), and finished in the Top 10 of the Tour de France four times. Most recently Mancebo was named “Men’s Stage Racer of the Year” by VELO magazine in its January 2013 annual awards issue.
