The 135 kilometer long first stage of Tour Down Under starting from Prospect ended in a somewhat atypical galoping bunch sprint 135 kilometers later in Lobetham. The stage was dominated by Lotto-Belisol who reeled in the breakaway and brought their German sprinter, André Greipel to a perfect spot in the finale and on the finish line, Greipel was superb.
Team Saxo-Tinkoff’s Chris Anker Sørensen finished in the first group:
”It was an atypical finale where the big sprinters were dropped but Greipel somehow managed to get through to the finish line with the first guys. We had Johnny up there as well and he finished just outside the top ten. He’s in progress and he’ll be our guy for the bunchs sprints in the race. Equally important, Chris managed to stay in the first group as well and since he’s our man for GC, this was crucial. Tomorrow, the GC could practically be settled on the steep uphill finish and we have to be ready and put Chris in the right spot for the finale,” said Team Saxo-Tinkoff DS, Fabrizio Guidi.
