San Dimas Stage Race will draw top U.S. riders

Team TIBCO will race on home soil this weekend, sending a four-rider squad to contest the Team’s first domestic event of the season. The San Dimas Stage Race will attract top talent from across the country and kicks off in Southern California this Friday March 22 – 24.

Team TIBCO riders making their 2013 debut include 2007 San Dimas winner and former U.S. National Champion Meredith Miller, Irish National Champion Melanie Spath, and Amanda Miller – who took 2nd overall at San Dimas in 2011. Jo Kiesanowski will also join the squad after a strong solo performance at Merco Cycling Classic earlier this month.

The three-stage event will start with a challenging individual time trial Friday morning up the steep and winding Glendora Mountain Road. The 4.25-mile segment of the climb has a total elevation gain of 1257 feet, with a gradient ranging from 4.5 to 6.5 percent.

Saturday morning, the riders will take on the 56-mile San Dimas Hospital Road Race through Bonelli Park. For eight laps, teams will work to shed riders and wear out the field as they tackle the hilly circuit. The notable climb up Cannon will take its toll with an incline reaching up to 13 percent in one section. Shortly after, the road flattens out for a few miles before returning to more rollers.

The final stage comes Sunday with the Old Town Grand Prix criterium. The course is considered one of the fastest and toughest in Southern California. The six-corner crit features three long straight-aways, including a slightly downhill section that enables incredible speeds into the final right turn onto the finishing stretch.
