Rohan Dennis launched himself into the GC lead at the Dauphiné. Sports director Geert Van Bondt says the team will now rally behind the young Aussie talent to defend the lead.
The time trial consisted of long straight roads with only a few corners, and the whole time it was a little bit up-and-down but no real climbs. Rohan followed Jack Bauer in the car when he went for his TT so he know where all the tricky points were.
He started on a good tempo speed and built his race very well from there. At the first intermediate point he had the second best time and best of gc riders so far — but there was still 20km to go.
The big guns like Froome, Porte and Contador still needed to pass there but we know it looked good. When Froome was past he was three seconds behind so we told told him he was not riding for best young rider (that was the original plan) but for now for yellow!
At the second check point he was seven seconds faster than Froome so we just screamed that yellow now is there for him!
It was very exciting to wait when Froome finished but Rohan beat him by five seconds! The leader still had to finish who still had a bonus of1:56 on him but he finished almost four minutes down.
Tomorrow we will defend the jersey as hard as possible. We will take our responsibility as a team and see how far he can go.
Rohan is still very young and it’s an up-hill finish so it will not be easy as Froome is only behind by five seconds. But everything that comes is bonus and all we can say is a world-class performance from a 23 year old neo-pro today!
