Chris Carmichael offers a training plan for the rest of us

If there was ever a cycling training book written for me, it’s Chris Carmichael’s The Time Crunched Cyclist: Fit, Fast and Powerful in 6 Hours a Week. With a job that keeps me busy during the day and family commitments (and this web site) to keep me tied up at night, it’s very difficult to carve out hours to ride.

USA Cycling sent out a news update today. You can view the full article here, but I have a few highlights.

34 road and mountain bike athletes recently attended USAC’s talent identification program
USAC saw a 2.7% growth in memberships this year.
The 2009 National Racing Calendar will have 34 races and more than $1.3 million in overall prize payouts.
The 2009 American Mountain Bike Challenge series has been announced as well. This series gives riders of all abilities to a chance to compete at a top level right in their own backyard.

A paceline is an effort to save energy – When riding in a paceline, remember the effort is intended to benefit the group; to ride faster than you would as an individual at a reduced effort and provide you time to recover immediately following a hard effort. “Well, I can see the issue if a baseball player uses performance enhancing drugs. It gives him a competitive advantage. But what does anyone care if I use them and just work out at the gym? That’s not illegal, is it?”
Uh, yeah, Brutus. It is illegal. Unless steroids or EPO were prescribed to you by your doctor, you obtained them illegally from someone who is not authorized to sell them to you.
