Women’s Road Race:

Depsite problems with a dropped chain, Marta Bastianelli of Italy attacked Nederlander Marianne Vos 15km from the finish and held on to finish six seconds in the lead. Bastianelli and Vos last duked it out in the Women’s Junior Worlds, when Vos came out on top. Italian women took 3 of the top 5 spots.

Under 23 Men’s Race:

Peter Velits of Slovakia ended up on the top of the podium after 172km and numerous escapes. The race ended in a mass sprint, with Australian Wesley Sulzberger in second and Jonathon Bellis of the British team in third.

Elite Mens Road Race:

After a week of political battles that were likely more trying than the race itself, defending World Champion Paolo Bettini took the ultimate revenge on those that tried to keep him out of the race by winning the race in the final sprint over Alexandr Kolbnev of Russia and local boy done good Stefan Schumaker.

UCI President Pat McQuaid, who spent the better part of the previous week trying to keep Bettini out of the race, kissed and made up at the post-race press conference.

Other News:

  • It was reported that the Italian team was riding on their spare bikes, as both their bikes, and those of the Brazilian team, were stolen on Saturday evening.
  • Bettini says that 2008 will be his final year. His goals are to defend his Olympic title in Beijing and to get one more rainbow jersey at home in Italy.
