This article on Yahoo Sports (courtesy of Reuters) provides a general biographical overview of Oscar Pereiro. It states that he is the sixth Spanish winner of the Tour de France after Federico Bahamontes, Luis Ocana, Pedro Delgado, Miguel Indurain and Alberto Contador.
The poor guy just can’t get a break. He’s the red-headed stepchild of Spanish cycling.
Condator gets the credit for being the fifth Spaniard to win, even though he did it a year after Pereiro.
This makes some sense however. This way, if Floyd Landis wins his appeal with the CAS and gets the title back, Contador is still the fifth winner and Pereiro goes back to being an also ran (and an interesting footnote in the TdF history books).
All the more basis for why the UCI and ASO jumped the gun on awarding him the title.
