Here are some news headlines from road and cyclocross racing:
- Expect Cadel Evans to be gunning for a finish near the top of this weekend’s Tour of Lombardy. With Danilo DiLuca out of the picture, a finish of 6th or better will put him at the top of the Pro Tour ranks for 2007. If Vinokourov’s win in Stage 13 of the TdF is invalidated, Evans doesn’t even need to aim for 6th, as he would gain 10 points for that.
- Jason McCartney, late of the Discovery Channel squad, is joining his former boss Johan Bruyneel at Astana. Sean Yates is also reported to be joining the squad. Alberto Contador had said he was moving there, but is reportedly still shopping around with some Spanish squads.
- The U.S. team for the Cyclocross World Cup event in Kalmthout, Belgium has been announced. The men’s team will consist of Ryan Trebon, Jonathon Page, Jonathon Baker and Ian Boswell. Katie Compton will lead the women’s team of Christine Vardaros and Sarah Kirlin.
- We’re serious about doping! Really! The UCI has conducted only 20 out of 500 planned out of competition doping controls this year. A spokesperson notes that they will conduct most of the tests from October through Christmas (when, coincidentally, all of the riders will really be out of competition, as the season is over).
- In 2008, the UCI will be collecting blood and urine samples from all Pro Tour riders to establish a baseline for testing throughout the year. Given the speed with which they are doing out of competition testing (see above), they should probably get all of the samples collected by 2014.

[…] year. There will be a combination of 15,000 in and out-of-competition tests. Of course, given the UCI’s track record this year, they should actually peform about 100 of those […]
