2007 U.S. Cyclocross Championships

Cyclocross, Racing News

Ah, if watching cyclocross were only this way in States. While we may not have Belgian beer, which as a whole in my beer snob opinion is the best in the world, and freiten en mayonnaise (french fries with mayo - once you’ve had it, you’ll never go back to ketchup), we do have great racing action.

The U.S. cyclocross season wrapped up its season in Kansas City this past weekend. The Midwest’s first real winter storm hit in the week before the race, covering the course in ice, snow and mud - classic ‘cross conditions.

Katie Compton continued her dominance in cyclocross this year, adding another national champion jersey to her collection. She took the lead early, and while Georgia Gould and Rachael Lloyd challenged, they never were able to overtake Compton. Compton nows plans to return to her European base to prepare for the cyclocross world champs.

Ryan Trebon, Tim Johnson, Jonathon Page and Jeremy Powers were all in contention for the Elite Men’s race. The sun came out just in time to melt some of the ice and make the course a muddy mess.

Trebon was having a great race until another rider crossed the tape from another lane and crashed directly into him, sending him to the hospital. Powers was also racing strong until a crash on the second lap that knocked the wind out of him. He continued racing, but was not able to recapture his early form.

Tim Johnson traded the lead with Page, as well as Todd Wells, but managed to keep in front of the pack often enough to choose his own line. After Page had a crash in the second to last lap, Johnson was in the clear to complete the race on his own terms, finishing 25m in front of the pack.

Johnson and Powers are also heading back to Europe for the remainder of the cross season there.
