It’s still quite early in the year, but many of the Pro Tour teams are already gearing up the PR machines, introducing their 2008 teams to the public and holding early training camps. CyclingNews.com has a great directory of the team rosters here.
- Saunier-Duval Scott is back with a fairly young squad (nine riders under the age of 24)after losing veterans David Millar and Gilberto Simoni. They are optimistic about having another strong season, but understand that it will be a challenge.
- Euskatel-Euskadi is stressing teamwork in its 15th season in the pro peloton. The team will be anchored by Asturian star Samuel Sánchez, Haimar Zubeldia, young Igor Antón and veteran Mikel Astarloza. Sanchez and Zubeldia are said to be focusing on the Tour de France.
- Milram has switched its country of registration from Italy to Germany, and has to answer some tough questions after doping allegations in 2007. Team leader Erik Zabel has implied that 2008 will likely be his last season, while Alessandro Pettacchi is still fighting CONI (the Italian Olympic Committee) about a non-negative test for asthma meds during the Giro.
- Caisse d’Epargne is in cycling for the long term, with a 6 year contract dating from 2005. After 30 victories in 2007, they are making few changes, adding only 8 new riders and pinning Grand Tour hopes on Oscar Pereiro.
- Bouygues Telecom agreed to a two year extension of its sponsorship with the eponymous cycling team, giving them support through the end of the 2010 season. They have added four junior pros to the team, as well as recruiting Russian Iouri Trofimov from the Moscow Stars.
- Liquigas introduced their 2008 team on the 9th of January in Bibione, Italy, a town which has become co-sponsor of the squad for 2008. After the departure of Danilo di Luca, the team will be looking to Filippo Pozzato and Daniele Bennati to act as team leaders. The team will be riding Bianchi bikes this year.
- Still reeling from a forced withdrawl from the 2007 Tour de France, the Cofidis team held a low-key rollout in Paris. Continuing their committment to French cycling, they have added two French neo-pros to the team.
- Kristin Armstrong will be leading the new Cervélo-Lifeforce women’s pro cycling team. It should be no surprise that the women will be riding Cervélo bikes. They will be supported by FSA, Vittoria, Zipp, Speedplay, Fizik and Skoda.
It seems that the “spring” training camps start as soon as the teams are introduced.
- Quick-Step started their camp in Benicassim, Spain on the 9th and will be continuing through the 17th.
- The revised Barloworld team will be meeting in Marina di Bibbona on the Tuscan coast for nine days of training and team bonding. Earlier in the week, riders arrived in Italy and picked up their 2008 bikes and clothing.
- CSC has already been training in Mallorca and has been enjoying wonderful training weather.
