Tour of California Stage 1 - February 18th, 2008

February 19th, 2008 · No Comments

Team CSC holds onto the lead as JJ Haedo takes his first stage of the 2008 Tour of California. This is his fifth stage win at the race, and his he has his victories in the inaugaral 2006 race to thank for getting him on Team CSC.

The day started with Jackson Stewart of BMC attacking with some others at around the 15km mark. The other attacks were short lived, but Stewart hung on, building a lead of as much as thirteen minutes while the field was content to let him suffer.

BMC took the Most Aggressive and KOM jerseys for the day, and he was finally caught at the bottom of the mountain, setting up the peloton for a fast final 30km into the field sprint.

The action really started to pick up when the race came into the final 3 circuits in Santa Rosa. Slipstream was working to get their sprinter, Tyler Farrar into place, while CSC, Quickstep and BMC were also working for their riders. In the end it was Haedo led out by Fabian Cancellera, who came across the line first.

George Hincapie had a minor wreck a little back from the finish, but is expected to be okay for tomorrow’s stage.
