The Big Upgrade - Part 4

March 5th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Today is the day that it all starts to come together.

Tonight I start my Park Tool Class at Campus Cyclery and I will start putting the new drivetrain parts onto my bike. As I had mentioned a while ago, I do have a new carbon fiber frame coming, but with the riding season looming on the near horizon, I just want to get the bike rebuilt. If I pay attention in class and learn all of the skills I need, I should be able to transer everything over to the new frame in April in short order.

Furthermore, my wife’s bike is in need of the current parts. I want to get her bike built so she can get on the road. That reminds me - she needs a seatpost.

Overall, I’m pretty proud of the overall cost savings that I was able to achieve in building this bike. The end result of this project will be a 16 pound carbon fiber race bike built with all new parts for under $2200. I saved at least 40% over the retail costs of the parts. If I factored in what an average carbon fiber frame costs, the savings would be closer to 50%.

I’ll post pictures of the Flyte with the new drivetrain when it’s completed, then follow up with pictures of the Pedal Force bike in April.

As of the original posting, I did not have the frame in hand, and as Pedal Force actually had me on the bottom of the list for delivery, I actually ended up cancelling my order and getting a different frame.
