Trek to Sever Manufacturing and Marketing Relationship with Greg Lemond

April 8th, 2008 · No Comments

The big news out today is that Trek has decided to end their 13-year relationship with Greg Lemond and Lemond Cycles. There are several reasons, but the foremost reason are Lemond’s actions themselves. Trek maintains that Lemond has done and said things that have damaged both the Lemond brand, and Trek itself. It’s no secret that Lemond was not a fan of Lance Armstrong, nor seemingly anyone else that would seek to challenge his Tour de France record. While Lemond was certainly strong in his time, Trek is still seeking to cash in on the Armstrong name, and they did not need someone from within their own organization laying out doping allegations at the seven time champion. While Lemond has not been part of the Armstrong fan club, the reasons for Trek ending the relationship go beyond that.  Trek’s court claim alleges that Lemond took advantage of his relationship with Trek to purchase numerous Lemond-branded bicycles(said to be $2.5m) at employee pricing and resold or distributed them.In addition, Trek has paid $5m to license Lemond’s name and invested millions more to design, manufacture and market his bikes.
