Mountain bike racing news, Racing News, Road Racing News

Hurricane Ike swept through a major portion of the U.S. on Sunday. I hope that everyone is okay and didn’t receive any storm damage.

Here’s some of the latest cycling news:

  • We’ll lead with Lance, because he tends to lead when he rides:
    • CyclingNews now seems to think that Lance is going to race all over. Furthermore, they think that we may see a Team Livestrong instead of Lance returning to Astana (Hmm. Why does that sound familiar?)
    • Lance’s Team Livestrong dominated at the 12 Hours of Snowmass.
    • There’s a bit of an argument going on in the academic community over a paper about a study done on Lance and his maturation as a rider.
    • German television officials are “not amused” about Lance’s plans to return and race in the Tour de France. They seem to think that he is a part of the old generation that was lax about drugs.
  • In an interview with the Birmingham, AL newspaper Birmingham News, Floyd Landis confirmed that he would return to racing in 2009, most likely at the Tour of California. He was in town for the Pepper Place criterium races. It’s not clear yet whether he will be racing for a team organized by the Momentum Sports Group. He said: “It’s not solidified yet but it was announced before I had a chance to get everything organized.”
  • Canadian racing team H&R Block is seeking new riders for their team. Potential applicants should be based in British Columbia or Alberta.
  • French rider Clement L’Hotellerie is the latest addition to the Cervelo Test team.
  • Frank Hoj, currently of Cofidis will ride for the Saxo Bank team in 2009.
  • World Chamion Paolo Bettini was not able to reach agreement with Quick Step to continue for another year, and is now reportedly talking to a smaller Continental team that is still forming.
Results:
  • Mark Cavendish (Columbia) was going for yet another stage win at the Tour of Missouri  when Francesco Chicchi (Liquigas) came around in the final seconds to nip him out. Christian Vande Velde finished close enough to secure the overall.
  • Alessandro Petacchi (LPR Brakes - Ballan) sprinted to victory in Liverpool on Sunday’s final stage of the Tour of Britain and Geoffroy Lequatre (Agritubel) finished safely in the bunch to secure the overall victory.
  • In the Under-23 Tour de l’Avenir, Tejay Vangaderen of the U.S. National team won the final stage, but it was Jan Bakelents of Belgium who secured the general classification.
