Pierrick Fedrigo (Bouyges Telecom) dropped Jurgen Van de Walle (Quick Step) in the final corner to take victory in the 6th stage of the Criterium du Dauphine Libere. Overnight leader Alejandro Valverde crossed the line a little over four minutes later with second-place holder Cadel Evans (Silence-Lotto) and third-place Alberto Contador (Astana) to stay in the yellow jersey.

Fedrigo and Van de Walle were the survivors of a five man breakaway that included Lars Bak (Saxo Bank), Stephane Goubert (Ag2r), Juan Manuel Garate (Rabobank) that went clear on the climb to to Col d’Izoard, the day’s main obstacle. Fedrigo also took over the climber’s jersey as a results of his efforts on this stage.

Valverde leads Evans by just 16 seconds with two stages remaining.

Saturday’s penultimate stage is a three-climb, 157km mountainous route from Briancon to the summit finish at Saint-Francois-Longchamp. The course tackles two hors categorie climbs at the Galibier and Croix de Fer before the finish at the Cat. 1 Longchamp summit.
