Heinrich Haussler survived a nearly stage long breakaway to ride to a commanding victory in Stage 13 of the 2009 Tour de France. The G.C. leaders finished together, so there should be no changes at the top. AG2R’s Rinaldo Nocentini will get another day in the yellow jersey, and Alberto Contador and Lance Armstrong still sit very close to the top.

Haussler broke away with Juan Miguel Garate (Rabobank), Jens Voigt (Saxo Bank), Ruben Perez Moreno (Euskaltel), Rigoberto Uran (Caisse d’Epargne), Sylvain Chavanel (Quick Step) and Christophe Moreau (Agritubel) at km 5 and this group stayed together and ahead for much of the race before Haussler went out on his own.

Today’s stage was by far the most mountainous the riders have seen since the rest day. The route featured five climbs:

  • Côte de Xertigny (Cat. 3), a 2.0 km climb that averages 5.3 percent and summits at Km 46.0
  • Col de la Schlucht (Cat. 2), a 8.9 km climb that averages 4.2 percent and summits at Km 105.0
  • Col du Platzerwasel (Cat. 1), an 8.7 km climb that averages 7.6 percent and summits at Km 138.5
  • Col du Bannstein (Cat. 3), a 2.1 km climb that averages 5.1 percent and summits at Km 165.5
  • Col du Firstplan (Cat. 2), an 8.4 km climb that averages 5.4 percent and summits at Km 179.5
