At long last, perfect fall riding weather here in the Midwest. Here’s your bicycle racing news. Enjoy it while I go for a ride.
Vacansoleil wins some and loses some, Kluge to Milram, NetApp team has Pro Tour ambitions, Ullrich will respond on his schedule, and more:
- Daniele Pietropolli will ride for Lampre-NGC in 2010.
- Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil) is considering several offers for 2010.
- Reinier Honig is leaving Vacansoleil for Acqua & Sapone – CafĂ© Mokambo
- Meanwhile, Vacansoleil has added three riders added to the team for 2010. Wouter Mol, Gorik Gardeyn and Rob Ruygh komen volgend jaar uit voor de Nederlandse wielerformatie. Wouter Mol, Gorik Gardeyn (photo) and Rob Ruygh will ride for the Dutch team next year.
- Marcus Ljungqvist has announced that he will retiring from racing to become DS at Team Sky. The 35 year old Swede spent the last season at Saxo Bank. It’s said that he turned down an offer from the Radio Shack team to go with Team Sky.
- Roger Kluge, currently leading the Amsterdam Six Day race with partner Robert Bartko, has signed a one year contract with Milram for 2010.
- The new NetApp cycling team starts with 14 riders from nine nations and big ambitions for the 2010 season. “All the contracts are signed and sealed,” said team spokeswoman Sandra Schmitz. Team boss Patrick Rogers would like to see the team in the Pro Tour by 2012.
- Paulo Tiralongo, Enrico Gasparotto, Giuseppe Martinelli and Guido Martinelli all seem to be headed to Astana. Allan Davis (Quick Step) and Gilberto Simoni may be heading that way as well. Astana is supposed to learn about their Pro Tour license today.
- Paris looks to be getting a long awaited velodrome. Plans are being drawn up for an indoor track at France’s future National Cycling Center, which will be located in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. The covered track will have seating for 3500 people. An indoor BMX track is also in the works.
- Jan Ullrich responded to the latest accusations of doping, saying that they are repititions of already known allegations. He says that he’ll not enter the debate right now and that he’ll respond at the appropriate time.
Vandenbrouke:
- Frank Vandenbroucke will be buried Saturday in Ploegsteert in a private ceremony.
- The latest reports about his death are saying that he died from a double pulmonary embolism and that he had an existing, previously undiagnosed heart condition that likely contributed to his death last Monday. He was drunk before he died and may have been using drugs as well.
- Ivano Fanini of Acqua & Sapone, who has done much to help young cyclists in trouble, said that while tragic, Vandenbrouke’s death does not surprise him all that much. He’s seen all too many promising young riders die, and thinks that we have not seen the end of the doping scandals.
Results:
- Germans Robert Bartko and Roger Kluge lead the Six Days of Amsterdam after the opening night. Risi & Marvulli are in second and Stam & Lampater are in third.
