In today’s bicycle racing news, Nelson Vails and BMX get a shout out from the Hall of Fame, Niels Albert on top of ‘cross rankings, Rhenen unhappy with Giro route and more:
- I’m equally excited to see that Nelson Vails and Clayton Johns are being inducted into the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame. I saw Vails race at the Pan Am Games when they were in Indianapolis years ago and he was, quite simply, a force of nature. Johns may be less known to the road racing community, but he has been fundamentally involved in the growth of BMX racing in the country.
- Gregory Joseph is the 19th rider to sign a two year contract with Topsport Vlaanderen – Mercator. The 21-year resident of Brasschaat had 12 wins with the Jong Vlaanderen team this season.
- 22 year old Nico Schneider will race for the Luxembourg based Team Differdange in 2010.
- With eight wins under his belt, Niels Albert leads the UCI Cyclocross rankings over Zdenek Stybar and Klaas Vantornout.
- Alberto Contador is now leaning towards the Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, rather than the Tour of Italy next year.
- The Political Reformed Party (SGP) of Rhenen is dissatisfied with the route for the 2010 Giro d’Italia. On May 9, 2010, the second stage of the race will start in Amsterdam and arrive in Utrecht, but will also include the villages of Elst and Achterberg, part of Rhenen. The SGP contends that Sunday is a day of rest and does not like the race disturbing them.
- Rama Yade, the French Secretary for Sports, says that it is critical that the UCI and the AFLD are united in the fight against doping. The two organizations are still at loggerheads over the administration of tests at the 2009 Tour de France.
- Stefan Schumacher sought to have his two year doping suspension dismissed by the French Council of State, but they dismissed his appeal. His suspension will run until August of 2010.
