Interbike Vendor Spotlight – POC

November 20th, 2009 by Ron Callahan 680 views One Comment

POC is relatively new to the bike scene, having just been around for one season. Their focus is on the downhill, freeride and BMX markets and signs seem to indicate that they have been well received there. Their gear has been tested by some of the most influential athletes in those disciplines and the engineers in POCs R&D department listened and made improvements to their products where needed.

For 2010, in their quest for better head protection, POC is taking a close look at “rotational violence”. Rotational violence comes as a consequence of the friction between the shell of a helmet and the ground that gets passed through to the rider’s brain. They collaborated with MIPS, a company with years of research on the subject to come up with their new Cortex DH MIPS helmet.

The Cortex DH features a lightweight advanced carbon shell wrapped over POC’s patent pending aramid reinforced in-mold liner. MIPS comes into play by allowing the outer shell of the helmet to slide on top of the liner, thereby reducing to rotational energy that is transferred to the brain when there is a crash. Despite the double shell, the helmet is fully ventilated for maximum comfort.

POC’s VPD (viscoelastic polymer dough) line offers a full selection of protection for arms, legs and the spine. New for 2010 is the Spine VPD tee, a short sleeve jacket with integrated shoulder cups, breast plate and back protector. The Spine VPD tee has been certified at a high level to motorcycle standards, so it should provide plenty of protection to the gravity crowd.

For those who want a simple way to wear back protection, there is the Spine VPD Vest. It looks like a tri jersey with a full zip front, but it includes complete back protection for the coccyx and cervical regions of the back.

Also new for 2010 are a line of goggles, gloves and casual wear. For more information, visit POC at www.pocsports.com.
