Interbike Vendor Spotlight: SkirtSports
SkirtSports was founded in 2005 by former professional triathlete Nicole de Boom with the goal of ridding the world of ugly bike shorts.
De Boom started competing in triathlons as an amateur in 1995 and turned pro in 1999. Late in 2003, she had an idea for women’s cycling clothing that looked good and felt good while still losing nothing technically. Her first cycling skirt was worn in the 2004 Ironman Wisconsin, an event that she won. SkirtSports made its debut as a company in 2005 with its “TRIKS” line of pink accented fitness skirts and the company has since added a broad line of running shirts and tanks, cycling jerseys, swimwear, and yes, even cycling shorts. There are now over 50 style of shorts for running and cycling.
De Boom says that while some find the company’s clothing controversial, her philosophy is not “anti girl”, it is “pro woman”.
For Fall 2009, SkirtSports continues to revolutionize women’s workout wear with the debut of its Fall/Winter 2009 line. Their Vogue Knickers have returned to their cycling collection and are said to be perfect for a brisk bike ride. They are capri length and feature a SkirtStay Gripper at the calf opening to prevent fabric ride-up; also included is the high-end LammyChamois with mid-density foam and ultra-soft Dri-Lex fabric for moisture management.
Also new for Fall and Winter is a long sleeve jersey. It’s cut long in front to stay down and even longer in back to keep your back warm and not ride up. The jersey includes a full-zip reflective zipper and fashionable screenprinting on the arms.
“When the cold weather hits, we break out our best technology and designs to cope with the elements,” said DeBoom. “With heavier fabrics, longer sleeves and pants, cold weather is no longer a reason to miss your workout!”
Looking forward to warmer weather in the Spring, SkirtSports will be rolling out some new additions to their cycling collection. Shipping in March 2010 will be the Breezer BikeGirl and FreeRide ShortSleeve Jersey. Featuring a looser skirt over compression shorts, the new Breezer BikeGirl is perfect for the bike commuter or gym spin class. The shorts contain mini Chamois and an all-mesh skirt with a small slit that allows for movement. The new FreeRide ShortSleeve Jersey presents a longer sleeve length, reflective half zipper and long torso.
